SSS President and Chief Executive Officer (PCEO) Rolando Ledesma Macasaet announced in a recent statement that a record-high 2.4 million new members joined the SSS by the end of July 2024.
“That’s a 165 percent increase from the 923,000 enrollees registered in July 2023,” PCEO Macasaet said as he noted that the SSS usually registers roughly one (1) million new members annually.
According to SSS, the highest number of new enrollees came from Luzon. More than 882,000 individuals from various provinces in the island group registered with the SSS.
The National Capital Region came with the second highest number of new SSS members with more than 693,000. Mindanao was next with 436,000 new registrants. Followed by Visayas with 417,000 new registered members.
Meanwhile, more than 10,000 Overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) and self-employed persons comprised a significant portion of the new members registered by the SSS.
“We observed a significant increase in new self-employed members, which surged by 273 percent from 112,000 in 2023 to 419,000 in 2024.” PCEO Macasaet pointed out.
PCEO Macasaet remains positive that through the efforts of SSS, membership will continue to expand until the entire Filipino workforce in and out of the country will have social security coverage.
“In the first six months, we hit our year’s target of two million new members, a positive result of our massive membership and coverage drives throughout the country,” PCEO Macasaet added.
Based on the current numbers, PCEO Macasaet is confident that the SSS will register a total of five million new members by the end of 2024.
SSS-GSIS Pensyonado (SGP) Partylist lauded the Social Service System (SSS) and the PCEO Macasaet for their tireless effort to ensure that all Filipinos will have social security.
“Bawat Pilipino, Dapat Pensyonado. This is a step towards the right direction as we ensure social security coverage for all Filipinos. These numbers are indicative of how Filipinos are now steadily making decisions that will benefit them in the future.” SSS-GSIS Pensyonado Partylist spokesperson Fercival Yutan said on Friday (September 27).
